Strengthening your LEADERSHIP PRESENCE

Leadership Presence

This blog is for leaders, aspiring leaders or anyone who want to have GREATER IMPACT in their life, work or world.

If you are a leader, aspiring leader or someone who wants to have more impact in your work or world, your PRESENCE is a fundamental KEY to your success.

I think PRESENCE is an intangible thing… something that is very hard to describe or articulate, but when we meet someone who has PRESENCE… we NOTICE it, we FEEL it and we are IMPACTED by it.

Having the title of “Leader” doesn’t give you PRESENCE….and in my quest over many years to understand it and cultivate it, I have unpacked what I believe are 7 key ideas and practices to strengthening PRESENCE.

PRESENCE is strengthened when we…

1.       Are very CLEAR about WHO WE ARE, what is our PURPOSE, what are our VALUES and KNOWING and OWNING our unique SKILL and STRENGTH set.

2.       Understand that in every encounter/meeting or exchange we have, we IMPACT the other person and we want it to be a POSITIVE IMPACT.(see next point)

3.       Are PRESENT to whoever we are with – that mean we are FULLY ENGAGED, we are LISTENING WITH OUR WHOLE BODIES, we are CURIOUS and VALUE the person or people we are with. They leave the encounter with us feeling “heard” and valued.

4.       “THINK, FEEL and ACT as ONE”, this means we do not have “inner conflict”. Our thoughts/beliefs/mindset and our behaviour and our feelings/heart are ALIGNED. When we are internally aligned this emits a “frequency of congruency”– people believe us and trust us and want to be with us because what we say and how we behave “line up”.

5.       Are IMPECCABLE with OUR WORD (taken from “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz) This means we think before we speak, we choose our words carefully because we understand the impact words have. We don’t gossip, talk about others, put ourselves or others down. We also speak the truth, we don’t duck the “difficult conversations”. Even in difficult conversations we honour the other person. We are compassionate, honest and respectful.

6.       Understand our ENERGY (vibration) impacts others.  We “look after our energy” by making sure we are looking after our physical body (have enough sleep/rest, exercise, eat good food); looking after our mental body (managing the “quality” of our thoughts/beliefs); looking after our emotional body (being aware of our feelings and “opening our Heart” to others) and looking after our spiritual body (being in nature/taking to be still/ connecting to the Universe). We can also look after our energy by reducing our stress response via meditation or energy balancing.

7.       Take time each day to be “still” or meditate or take some short breaks where we consciously breathe and focus our attention on our breath. When we do this regularly we come in contact with “the still Presence within”, and this strengthens an outer Presence of Calm, Clarity and “egoless” Confidence.
